Lamla Nokhubeka, a young farmer managing Kibiti Farming in Upper Gxulu near Keiskamahoek, is turning opportunity into tangible results. Backed by structured finance support from the Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency (ECRDA), his farm has become a model of productive agriculture and community impact. Recently, Kibiti Farming completed a successful harvest across 14 hectares, producing 5 hectares of cabbage, 8 hectares of potatoes, and 1 hectare of blueberries. Most of the produce supplies East London markets and local outlets, marking a key milestone for the business and the wider community.

Kibiti Farming currently employs more than 20 local residents, who contribute to planting, irrigation, crop management, and harvesting. Each harvest generates income for local households while equipping workers with valuable agricultural skills. The farm’s success illustrates how structured support can create both economic and social benefits, building capacity within rural communities.

With access to 130 hectares of arable land, Kibiti Farming is positioned for growth. Planned investments in modern irrigation infrastructure are expected to increase production capacity and open additional job opportunities for local residents. Mr Nokhubeka noted, “This support has helped us achieve a successful harvest and create jobs for our community. With improved irrigation, we will be able to grow more and employ even more people. I am truly grateful for the support from ECRDA.”

The story of Kibiti Farming demonstrates how ECRDA-backed initiatives can drive sustainable livelihoods, strengthen local economies, and foster community development. Through strategic support, young farmers like Lamla Nokhubeka are transforming rural agriculture into a platform for long-term growth and empowerment.
