Emmanuel Mudau, a self-taught sheep and goat breeder from Venda, Limpopo, transformed a small investment into a flourishing agricultural business. His farming journey began in 2009 when he resigned from his job as a sales representative at a furniture shop to follow his passion for agriculture. Using his pension funds, he purchased three goats from a local farmer, marking the modest start of what would become a successful livestock enterprise. In 2010, he expanded his herd with ten Damara sheep, laying the foundation for future growth and diversification. Through dedication, continuous learning, and hard work, Emmanuel grew his livestock into hundreds of top-quality animals, including his own breed, Mathuba Genetics.

Emmanuel specializes in breeding Bosvelder sheep, a resilient mix of Dorper, Van Rooy, and Pedi breeds, well-suited to the harsh Bushveld conditions of Limpopo. The breed is hardy, fertile, and able to thrive in areas with hard water, making it ideal for both commercial and communal farming. His innovative approach allows Bosvelder sheep to be farmed without extensive land, making them accessible to farmers in communal areas. Emmanuel’s methods demonstrate that livestock farming can be profitable, even for small-scale or resource-limited farmers, when paired with the right genetics and management practices.

Beyond breeding, Emmanuel actively engages with other farmers through study groups, sharing knowledge and promoting sustainable practices. He also participates in annual auctions, with upcoming events scheduled in Bela-Bela in February and later in August. These auctions provide a platform to sell his Bosvelder sheep and expand the reach of his breeding program. By creating Mathuba Genetics and promoting hardier, locally adapted breeds, Emmanuel has contributed to the growth of livestock farming in Limpopo while offering solutions tailored to challenging environments.

Emmanuel’s story is a testament to the power of vision, patience, and persistence in agriculture. Starting small, he built a thriving enterprise that supports rural livelihoods and provides a blueprint for aspiring farmers. His advice is clear: trust the process, believe in your vision, and never stop learning. Through innovation, resilience, and community engagement, Emmanuel Mudau continues to inspire the next generation of livestock farmers in Venda and beyond.
