The Sefene Office in Botlokwa, part of the Capricorn East Agro-Ecological Zone within Molemole Local Municipality, recently hosted farmers from the surrounding area for a farmers’ day focused on disaster management and climate-smart agricultural practices. The event aimed to equip rural farmers with practical knowledge to respond effectively to challenges caused by climate change, natural disasters, pests, and diseases.
Dr. Magoro Madimetja from Tompi Seleka College of Agriculture led the session. He presented comprehensive strategies for disaster management, adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, and methods for mitigating pests and diseases. The presentation emphasized sustainable approaches that protect both the environment and the livelihoods of local farmers.
The programme encouraged participants to adopt new practices that improve productivity while conserving natural resources. Techniques discussed included soil and water conservation, crop diversification, and integrated pest management. Farmers were also guided on how to anticipate and respond to weather-related challenges and minimize crop losses.
This engagement reflects a broader commitment to building a resilient farming community capable of withstanding external shocks. By promoting climate-smart practices and disaster preparedness, the initiative supports long-term food security in the region. Farmers left the session with practical tools and knowledge to enhance productivity, safeguard the environment, and strengthen the sustainability of their farming operations.
