Nozuko Cezula, a 49-year-old black female farmer from Kokstad in the Greater Kokstad area under the Harry Gwala District, has built a remarkable agricultural empire. Her journey began modestly after leaving her teaching career to pursue a passion for farming, a decision that required resilience, courage, and determination. Starting with limited resources and little confidence in her ability to succeed, she established Tafelkop Farm, trading under the name Nozuko Farming. Her initial focus was on sheep farming, but she faced challenges common to emerging farmers, including lack of capital, limited access to markets, and insufficient infrastructure for grain storage. Despite these hurdles, Nozuko’s vision and tenacity enabled her to gradually expand her operations into a multifaceted agribusiness that now includes cattle and yellow maize production.

The growth of Nozuko Farming has been punctuated by strategic support and careful planning. Between 2022 and 2024, her 93-hectares of land received mechanization support for cultivation, while the Agribusiness Development Agency (ADA) provided R2.2 million in funding. This support enabled her to purchase Beef Master cattle, open heifers, bulls, and a storage shed, laying a solid foundation for sustainable expansion. Today, the farm operates across a thousand hectares and employs a staff of 21, including six permanent employees who are fully covered by the Unemployment Insurance Fund and remunerated according to South African labour laws. These measures have helped professionalize the farm’s operations while creating employment opportunities in the region.

Nozuko Farming has also achieved significant commercial success. The farm supplies 1 500 tons of yellow maize each season to Kokstad Milling and an additional 1 500 tons to international markets through an agent. In livestock production, the farm sells 50 live weaners annually to Karan Beef and 100 male lambs to East Griqualand Meat Supply. These partnerships illustrate the farm’s ability to navigate both domestic and international markets effectively. Despite challenges such as limited silos and fluctuating market conditions, Nozuko has maintained a consistent supply chain, demonstrating her business acumen and strategic planning in scaling operations.

Recognition of Nozuko’s success came through the Phezukomkhono Female Farmer Awards, hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development under MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa. Nozuko Farming emerged as the biggest winner, receiving R100 000 for the best export category and an additional R100 000 as the overall winner, totaling R200 000 in prize money. These awards aim to highlight and reward the dedication of women in agriculture while promoting their role in the broader agribusiness sector. MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa praised Nozuko Farming as an exemplary model, emphasizing the farm’s effective use of departmental support to achieve self-sustainability and commercial independence.

Nozuko Cezula’s journey from a former educator to a leading female farmer exemplifies determination, innovation, and strategic growth in agriculture. Her story reflects the potential for emerging farmers to transform limited resources into thriving agribusinesses when combined with vision, support, and hard work. Beyond personal achievement, Nozuko Farming contributes to employment, food production, and economic development in Kokstad and beyond. By leveraging government support, investing in infrastructure, and diversifying operations, Nozuko has built a sustainable enterprise that inspires aspiring female farmers across South Africa. Her achievements underscore the critical role of women in the agricultural value chain and provide a blueprint for transforming emerging farms into commercially successful ventures.
