The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has funded KMF Agro Processing, a 100% black-owned integrated meat enterprise based in Lichtenburg, North West, as part of its commitment to driving growth, sustainability, and transformation in South Africa’s agro-processing and agriculture sector.
Founded by Dr Obakeng Mfikwe, a medical doctor turned commercial farmer, KMF Agro Processing is positioned as a fully integrated red-meat business, operating across a feedlot, abattoir, and processing plant. This vertically integrated model enables greater control over quality, efficiencies across the value chain, and long-term sustainability in a highly competitive industry.

Dr Mfikwe’s farming journey began in July 2009, when he purchased his first registered Simbra cattle. Introduced to the breed by his father, the Simbra soon became central to his farming operation. In tribute, he named his stud Lekatu, the affectionate name by which his father was known as a young man—a legacy now etched into cattle pedigrees across South Africa.
Over the past 15 years, Simbra breeding has formed the foundation of Dr Mfikwe’s farming identity. Known for their balance, capacity, structural correctness, and consistency, Lekatu Simbras became a recognised name in the breed.
“Pursuing a passion never feels like work,” he reflects, describing how time in farming has passed almost imperceptibly.

Several influential bulls played a defining role in the development of the Lekatu herd. Among the earliest was Jacmar Libido (JM0463), purchased in 2012 at the National Championships. Though already eight years old at the time, Libido left a lasting imprint during his two-and-a-half years on the farm, consistently producing long, broad, well-boned progeny that went on to anchor future generations.
In 2014, a 2 000 km road trip across five provinces allowed Dr Mfikwe to engage directly with Simbra breeders nationwide. That journey led to the acquisition of Wisp Will Lood, a naturally polled bull admired for muscle, capacity, strong toplines, exceptional udders, and consistent scrotal quality. Lood’s progeny brought refinement and balance, producing feminine heifers and well-structured bulls.
A further milestone came in 2019 with the purchase of Richter Buks. Initially a second choice at auction, the bull proved transformative, adding masculinity and presence while retaining length, width, capacity, and bone structure. His most celebrated progeny, Lekatu Buick, was crowned Simbra Champion of the World in 2023, along with National Senior and Grand Champion titles, cementing the stud’s reputation for elite genetics.

In 2024, Dr Mfikwe made the strategic decision to disperse all stud animals and redirect his focus fully towards the red-meat business.
“It was not an easy decision,” he says, “but one that allows us to focus on the core of what we do with the feedlot and abattoir.”
The Total Dispersal Sale, held in March 2025 in Lichtenburg, marked the close of a significant chapter in Simbra breeding, while laying the groundwork for the next phase of growth.

With IDC funding now supporting KMF Agro Processing, the enterprise is well positioned to scale operations, strengthen local supply chains, and contribute meaningfully to food security and job creation.
The same discipline, long-term planning, and attention to detail that defined Dr Mfikwe’s breeding programme now underpin an integrated agro-processing business focused on efficiency and sustainability.
Grateful for the relationships and knowledge built over 15 years in Simbra breeding, Dr Mfikwe remains committed to the sector that shaped his journey—now through a business designed to add value across the entire red-meat value chain.
