When Charles Smith, a farmer from Schweizer-Reneke, planted his pumpkin fields in 2025, the odds were not in his favour. Rainfall was unpredictable, conditions were tough, and the crop was produced entirely under dryland conditions. Still, by the end of the season, Charles wasn’t talking about pressure or losses — he was talking about results.
“I went to market smiling,” he says.
Against expectations, Charles harvested around four Nelson F1 hybrid pumpkins per plant, a remarkable outcome for a semi-bush variety grown without irrigation. In a season that tested many farmers, his fields stood out, sparking interest and conversation among fellow growers in the area.
Charles knows his land well. Years of experience have taught him the importance of matching the right variety to the right conditions, and Nelson F1 proved to be a strong fit. The plants showed early vigour, maintained good health under moisture stress, and carried fruit consistently through the season. Each pumpkin was smooth, uniform, and medium-sized, making marketing straightforward and profitable.

Nelson F1 is a very early-maturing, semi-bush hybrid pumpkin, and for Charles, that growth habit made a real difference. The semi-bush structure allowed for mechanical weed control late into the season, reduced competition for moisture, and shortened the production cycle compared to vining types. These advantages added up quickly under dryland conditions.
The fruit quality reinforced his confidence. The pumpkins, weighing between 3 and 5 kg, had thick, deep-orange flesh, a small seed cavity, and excellent firmness. Buyers responded well, and the smooth grey skin made the produce easy to handle and attractive on the market floor. While Nelson F1 is typically expected to produce one to two fruits per plant, Charles’s results showed what is possible when experience, timing, and resilient genetics come together.
With the added benefit of strong storage ability — up to three months under controlled conditions — Charles had the flexibility to manage his sales rather than rush them. In a challenging season, Nelson F1 delivered confidence, consistency, and profit, reminding farmers that even under dryland conditions, the right variety in the right hands can still produce exceptional results.
