Free State Government Visit to Kleingryskop Farm Highlights Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture and Farmer Empowerment

The Free State Government continues to strengthen its commitment to agricultural development through regular engagement with farming communities and strategic monitoring of projects across the province. On 31 July, the Free State MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs, Ms Elzabe Rockman, accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Letsemeng Local Municipality, Cllr Andrew Visagie, conducted a courtesy visit to Kleingryskop Farm. The farm is situated approximately six kilometres from Luckhoff in the Letsemeng Local Municipality within the Xhariep District. The visit formed part of the department’s ongoing efforts to monitor agricultural activities and ensure that public resources are being used effectively to support sustainable farming and rural development. It also reflected the province’s continued focus on empowering local farmers while strengthening the agricultural sector as a key contributor to economic growth.

The courtesy visit provided an opportunity for government leaders to gain first-hand insight into the progress being made at Kleingryskop Farm and to engage directly with the beneficiary managing the farming enterprise. Joining the visit were officials from the Letsemeng Local Municipality’s Local Economic Development Unit, managers from the Xhariep District Extension and Advisory Services, as well as the farm beneficiary. Bringing together these stakeholders created an important platform for discussing the successes, challenges and future opportunities associated with the farming operation. The 1,567 hectare grazing farm was acquired by the Letsemeng Local Municipality and is currently leased to a local farmer through the municipality’s land redistribution programme. The beneficiary currently operates a vertically integrated farming enterprise specialising in genetics, cattle production and Dorper sheep farming. A vertically integrated approach enables the business to manage multiple stages of production while improving efficiency, quality control and long-term sustainability. Genetic improvement programmes play a significant role in producing healthier, more productive livestock with stronger breeding potential. At the same time, cattle and Dorper sheep production continue to provide valuable opportunities to meet the growing demand for high-quality livestock and meat products. Diversifying farming activities in this manner also strengthens the resilience of agricultural businesses by reducing dependence on a single source of income.

During the visit, discussions focused on the importance of effective resource management, agricultural support services and continued investment in farming enterprises that demonstrate strong growth potential.
