National Department of Agriculture Strengthens Extension Services Through Xhariep District Monitoring Programme

The National Department of Agriculture has launched a comprehensive three-day project monitoring visit in the Xhariep District of the Free State to strengthen agricultural extension and advisory services for farming communities. Conducted in collaboration with the Free State Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs (DARDEA), the initiative is being implemented through the Xhariep District Extension and Advisory Services within the Kopanong Local Municipality. Processing livestock into finished meat products allows farmers to capture greater value within the supply chain while meeting consumer demand for quality food products. Diversified income sources help smallholder farmers reduce financial risks associated with fluctuating market conditions and seasonal challenges. Supporting enterprises such as Ongegund Farm contributes to stronger rural livelihoods and more resilient farming businesses.

Smallholder farmers continue to play a significant role in South Africa’s agricultural sector, particularly in rural communities where agriculture supports household incomes and food security.
