Farmers in the OR Tambo District are set to benefit from an innovative technological initiative aimed at modernising agriculture and strengthening resilience to climate change. The South African System of Systems for Agricultural Modernisation, a collaborative programme involving the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture, Department of Science and Technology, CSIR, Agricultural Research Council, Technology Innovation Agency, and TerraClim, launched its pilot project in Mthatha yesterday. The initiative introduces advanced tools designed to help farmers anticipate adverse weather, manage production risks, and improve overall farm productivity. By integrating scientific research with practical farming applications, the programme seeks to transform the way smallholder and commercial farmers in the region respond to environmental and climatic challenges. This marks a significant step towards climate-smart agriculture and the long-term sustainability of farming communities in the Eastern Cape.
