Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) has ramped up efforts to tackle the recent surge in Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) cases. The department has redirected R16 million from its Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP) funded projects to strengthen its outbreak response and protect the province’s livestock sector.
A portion of the reallocated funds has been earmarked for the procurement of 90 000 FMD vaccine doses. GDARD has confirmed that vaccines will be sourced from any South African Veterinary Authority approved suppliers to ensure quality and regulatory compliance. This measure aims to contain the outbreak, prevent further spread, and protect the livelihoods of livestock farmers across Gauteng.
GDARD emphasizes that controlling FMD requires a coordinated approach across provincial and national levels. The department is calling for collaboration between government agencies, veterinarians, farmers, and industry stakeholders. Integrated action is critical for vaccination campaigns, movement control, traceability, and surveillance.
The outbreak has highlighted the urgent need for rapid response and proactive measures. By redirecting CASP resources, GDARD aims to support farmers directly with access to vaccines and expert guidance on disease prevention. Farmers are encouraged to report suspected FMD cases immediately and comply with movement restrictions to limit further infections.
GDARD’s decisive actions reflect a strong commitment to protecting the province’s livestock industry. Immediate vaccination, coupled with coordinated national strategies, strengthens biosecurity, reduces economic losses, and helps restore confidence in Gauteng’s livestock markets.
The intensified FMD response demonstrates GDARD’s proactive approach to crisis management. With urgent vaccine access and coordinated action, the province is working to contain the outbreak, safeguard farmers’ livelihoods, and contribute to broader national efforts to restore FMD-free status in South Africa.
