Agritourism Africa, in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) under the DIVAGRI Project, hosted a 2-day agritourism training in KwaZulu-Natal aimed at equipping farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs with skills to transform their farms into profitable tourism ventures. The program combined classroom theory with practical site visits to demonstrate the full potential of agritourism.
On the first day, participants attended theoretical sessions covering agritourism principles, business planning, marketing strategies, and sustainable practices. The training emphasized how farmers can diversify income streams by leveraging their crops, livestock, and farm spaces. Certificates of completion were awarded to attendees, recognizing their successful participation and understanding of agritourism concepts.
The second day focused on practical application through visits to local agritourism sites. Participants observed firsthand how farms can be converted into tourism attractions, including farm stays, guided tours, farm-to-table experiences, and interactive educational activities. Trainers demonstrated methods to monetize farm outputs while creating unique experiences for visitors, highlighting the dual benefits of income generation and community engagement.
The training reinforced the value of agritourism in supporting sustainable rural development. By integrating agriculture with tourism, farmers can increase revenue, promote local culture, and attract domestic and international visitors. Participants left with actionable strategies to implement on their farms, from marketing approaches to infrastructure planning and visitor engagement techniques.
This initiative reflects a growing trend in South Africa, where agritourism provides a viable pathway for farmers to diversify income, create jobs, and strengthen rural economies while promoting sustainable and responsible tourism practices.
