As part of Operation Siyahlola, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, conducted an oversight visit today to the Zizamele Community Garden in Harding. The visit aimed to evaluate the progress of the project while recognizing the role of local farmers in driving food security and creating sustainable livelihoods.
During the visit, Hon. KaMadlopha-Mthethwa highlighted the importance of community-driven agricultural initiatives. She emphasized that community gardens remain vital in addressing hunger and uplifting rural communities through productive and sustainable farming practices.
“Community gardens like Zizamele are a clear example of how agriculture can transform lives, fight hunger, and build sustainable livelihoods. As a Department, we remain committed to supporting our farmers with the necessary resources and guidance to ensure that initiatives like these continue to thrive,” she said.
The Zizamele Community Garden has become a valuable food source for local families, reducing reliance on external food supply while providing opportunities for income generation. Through Operation Siyahlola, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to monitor and support such initiatives, ensuring that resources reach the grassroots level.
The oversight visit also provided an opportunity to engage directly with community members, assess challenges faced on the ground, and explore solutions to strengthen productivity. By fostering partnerships with local farmers, the Department aims to scale up community gardens across the province to address food insecurity.
KwaZulu-Natal’s focus on community-based agriculture reflects a broader commitment to sustainable rural development. With continued support and monitoring, projects like the Zizamele Community Garden are expected to grow into long-term contributors to food security and local economic stability.
