The fourth G20 Food Security Task Force meeting convened in Cape Town, bringing together agriculture experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to tackle urgent challenges in global food systems. With millions facing food insecurity, the focus is on practical strategies that enhance food availability, accessibility, and affordability, particularly for vulnerable communities.

This meeting builds on discussions from the third Task Force gathering in Cairo in September 2025. Delegates emphasized that inflation, climate shocks, and geopolitical pressures are disrupting agricultural supply chains and affecting farmers worldwide. In Cape Town, the conversation has shifted toward actionable solutions that strengthen farm-to-market systems and support sustainable agricultural growth.

Under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, four priorities guide the agenda. Strengthening market access is critical, ensuring farmers can sell their produce locally and internationally without unnecessary barriers. Empowering youth and women in agriculture is another key goal, recognizing that inclusivity drives innovation and long-term growth in the sector.

Innovation and technology transfer are central to modernizing agriculture. From precision farming and digital platforms connecting farmers to buyers, to climate-smart techniques that conserve resources, delegates are promoting tools that improve efficiency and productivity. Building climate resilience is also a major focus, with strategies designed to protect crops, soil, and livestock from extreme weather while supporting sustainable farming practices.

The Cape Town meeting aims to finalize practical frameworks for implementation across G20 countries. Delegates highlighted the importance of translating strategies into measurable results, from higher crop yields to improved market opportunities for smallholder farmers.

For agriculture professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders, this fourth Food Security Task Force session signals a turning point. By focusing on technology, inclusivity, and climate resilience, the G20 aims to secure a stronger, more sustainable, and equitable future for global agriculture.
