The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs (DARDLEA) held a focused Agriculture Sector Intervention programme in Mbombela aimed at supporting women farmers and expanding inclusive participation in the agricultural economy. The initiative placed strong emphasis on empowerment for women, youth and persons with disabilities who are active or entering the farming sector. It brought together agricultural stakeholders to share resources, knowledge and practical support tools that can improve productivity at local level. The programme also reinforced the importance of agriculture as a driver of rural livelihoods and household food security in Mpumalanga Province. It created a platform for direct engagement between government and farmers to strengthen long term cooperation.

The intervention targeted practical challenges faced by small scale farmers in the region, especially those operating in rural parts of the Ehlanzeni District Ehlanzeni District. Farmers received guidance on improving production methods, accessing support programmes and building stronger market linkages. Officials encouraged participants to remain consistent in their farming activities and to maintain active communication with the department to ensure continued support. The discussions also highlighted barriers such as limited access to infrastructure, funding constraints and climate related pressures affecting agricultural output. The programme aimed to provide solutions that can be implemented at community level while strengthening long term agricultural resilience.

Key development partners also played an important role during the engagement, including the National Youth Development Agency National Youth Development Agency and the National Empowerment Fund National Empowerment Fund. These institutions provided information on funding opportunities, youth development initiatives and enterprise support programmes available to emerging farmers. Their involvement helped broaden the scope of the intervention by linking agricultural development with economic empowerment pathways. Farmers were introduced to financial tools and support structures that can assist in scaling operations and improving sustainability. This multi stakeholder approach strengthened the impact of the programme by combining technical agricultural support with economic development resources.

The Agriculture Sector Intervention also reflected broader provincial efforts led by Mpumalanga DARDLEA to promote inclusive rural development within Mbombela Mbombela and surrounding areas. Women farmers were identified as key contributors to household food security and local economic activity, making their empowerment a central focus of the programme. The initiative encouraged collaboration between government, farmers and development partners to create sustainable agricultural systems. It also reinforced the need for continuous capacity building to ensure long term growth in the sector.

The engagement demonstrated a strong commitment to building a more inclusive agricultural sector where women, youth and persons with disabilities are actively supported to participate and succeed. It highlighted the importance of consistent farmer engagement with government structures to ensure that support programmes remain effective and responsive.
