Agri Tech Youth Expo in Bloemfontein Highlights Youth Empowerment and Innovation in Agriculture

The Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs, is hosting the Agri Tech Youth Expo at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein as part of Youth Month commemorations. The event is designed to recognise and celebrate the role of young people in the agricultural sector while promoting agriculture as a modern, innovative and opportunity driven industry. It brings together government leaders, students, researchers and industry stakeholders to engage on the future of farming in South Africa. The expo reflects a national commitment to youth development through practical exposure to agricultural careers and innovation. It also reinforces the importance of agriculture in driving inclusive economic growth and long term food security.

The Agri Tech Youth Expo is held under the theme “Empowering Youth for Inclusive Economic Growth through Agriculture and Innovation,” which highlights the growing connection between technology and agriculture. The theme reflects how agriculture is no longer limited to traditional practices but has become a dynamic and technology driven sector. Discussions at the expo emphasise that agriculture is a business sector that offers wide ranging opportunities in production, processing, logistics and agritech development. Artificial intelligence is also part of the conversation, with experts stressing that AI will not replace people in agriculture but will instead improve efficiency, decision making and productivity. This message is central to encouraging young people to embrace innovation while building practical skills.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Chief Director for Sector Capacity Development in the Department of Agriculture, Ms. Mmaserame Macucwa, explained the purpose and vision of the Agri Tech Youth Expo. She described the initiative as a platform designed to inspire and educate young people who represent the future of the agricultural sector. The expo provides space for knowledge sharing, engagement and exposure to opportunities that exist across the agricultural value chain. It also addresses key issues such as unemployment by showcasing agriculture as a viable career path. Through these engagements, young participants are encouraged to see themselves as active contributors to economic development and food production systems.

The Acting Deputy Director-General for Food Security and Agrarian Reform, Ms. Lebogang Botsheleng, delivered a keynote address that emphasised the importance of collaboration between government and academic institutions such as the University of the Free State. She acknowledged the strong partnership that supports agricultural development and youth participation in the sector. Ms. Botsheleng highlighted that agriculture has significant potential to become more attractive to young people, especially when linked to innovation and value addition. She encouraged youth to participate in the agricultural value chain, particularly in agro processing, where raw products are transformed into higher value goods. Her message focused on expanding opportunities beyond farming to include the entire agricultural ecosystem.

Ms. Botsheleng also stressed the importance of strengthening primary agriculture as a foundation for food security and poverty reduction. She noted that improving production at the primary level is essential for ensuring household food security and building resilient communities. The expo discussions reinforced this view by showing how agriculture can address both economic and social challenges when properly supported. Young people were encouraged to explore opportunities across all levels of the sector, from production to technology development and distribution. The event continues to serve as a key platform for inspiring youth participation in agriculture and positioning the sector as a driver of inclusive economic growth in South Africa.
