Limpopo MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Nakedi Kekana has continued efforts to strengthen rural farming and agricultural sustainability through targeted support initiatives in the province. On 26 May 2026, MEC Kekana handed over critical farming infrastructure to emerging farmer Jack Masenya at Oorlongfontein Farm outside Mokopane. The support package included solar panels, Jojo tanks, an animal drinking trough, a generator, and other important farming equipment aimed at improving production capacity and long term sustainability on the farm. The intervention forms part of government efforts to empower emerging farmers and improve food production in rural communities. It also highlights the province’s commitment to supporting farmers who continue to contribute to local economic growth despite difficult circumstances.

The handover took place shortly after MEC Kekana led a Foot and Mouth Disease vaccination drive at the Ga-Molekane village crush pen. Hundreds of cattle were vaccinated during the campaign as part of broader disease prevention measures aimed at protecting livestock and limiting the spread of infections in the province. Livestock diseases remain a serious concern for farmers because outbreaks can affect food supply chains, reduce income, and disrupt agricultural trade. The vaccination campaign demonstrated the department’s focus on preventative action and direct engagement with farming communities. By combining livestock health interventions with infrastructure support, the department is taking a more integrated approach to agricultural development.

The support initiative forms part of the Premier’s Intensive Service Delivery Week in the Waterberg District, which is implemented through the District Development Model. The programme is designed to improve coordination among government departments, private sector stakeholders, civil society organisations, and traditional leadership structures. It also focuses on unblocking service delivery challenges and monitoring important infrastructure projects across communities. Through this approach, government departments are able to respond more effectively to the needs of rural residents and agricultural producers. The programme places strong emphasis on collaboration and accountability in order to improve the overall impact of development projects.

During the handover ceremony, MEC Nakedi Kekana praised Jack Masenya for his resilience and determination as a farmer living with a disability. She highlighted his contribution to job creation, food security, and economic activity within the local community. The MEC stated that Masenya’s success reflects the importance of empowering rural farmers through practical government support and investment. His farming journey also serves as an example of how targeted interventions can help emerging producers expand operations and improve productivity. Access to reliable infrastructure such as water storage systems, energy solutions, and livestock support equipment can significantly improve farming efficiency and sustainability in rural areas.

The handover at Oorlongfontein Farm reflects the growing importance of supporting emerging farmers through direct and meaningful interventions. Government programmes that combine agricultural infrastructure, livestock protection, and service delivery coordination can create stronger rural economies and improve food production across the province. Initiatives such as the Premier’s Intensive Service Delivery Week also demonstrate how collaborative governance can help address development challenges more effectively. As Limpopo continues investing in emerging farmers like Jack Masenya, the province strengthens its commitment to agricultural growth, rural empowerment, and long term sustainability within the sector.
