The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers by handing over insecticides to the Jack Mafarahle Project, a cooperative of 28 members based in Spitskop, Ga-Mamabolo (Ward 34) in the Capricorn District. The cooperative manages 21 hectares of communal land dedicated to maize seed production, supplying quality seed to local farmers once certified by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC).

During 2025, the cooperative experienced significant losses due to a fall armyworm infestation, which severely affected maize production and harvests. LDARD’s intervention, through the provision of insecticides, aimed to restore stability and ensure continuity for the maize seed producers. The department also provided guidance on pest management, equipping farmers with the knowledge to protect crops while maintaining safety standards.

Beyond the chemicals, farmers received critical training on the safe handling, application, and storage of insecticides. Correct dosage and proper use were emphasised to prevent harm to both crops and farmers. This practical knowledge ensures long-term sustainability in maize seed production while safeguarding human and environmental health.

LDARD extended support by advising farmers on land care and improved land-use practices following recent floods that left maize fields waterlogged. Techniques such as minimum tillage, planting vetiver grass, and slope ploughing were recommended to control water movement, reduce soil erosion, and prevent structural damage to fields.

This intervention forms part of an ongoing seed production programme implemented by LDARD in partnership with the ARC. The programme aims to strengthen local maize seed production, empower farmers with skills, and secure a reliable supply of quality seeds for communities across Limpopo.
