The Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) hosted a vital Farmers Information Day at Rouxville Community Hall, linking farmers of Mohokare Local Municipality with key departmental units and services. The event aimed to empower farmers with knowledge on land acquisition, disaster management, animal health, soil and animal science, landcare, land-use management, extension services, and agribusiness to ensure sustainable agricultural practices.

Speakers from reputable organizations including the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA), Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and officials from the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development shared practical insights to help farmers enhance productivity and business growth. These sessions focused on equipping farmers with skills to navigate economic uncertainties and strengthen local agricultural enterprises.

Dr. Nienke van Hasselt, a State Veterinarian from Smithfield, delivered a detailed presentation on animal diseases such as Foot and Mouth and lumpy skin disease. She provided practical advice on disease prevention and care, stressing that animals should not be moved between districts due to the rapid spread of the Foot and Mouth virus. Dr. van Hasselt highlighted the importance of biosecurity measures and explained that laboratory diagnostic services are freely accessible to farmers within the district, offering cost-effective alternatives to private laboratories. CCS veterinarians are also available to assist with cases where transport is accessible.

Mr. Vincent Sondiyazi from SEDFA presented various funding opportunities, advisory support services, and production input programs designed to help farmers maximize their potential and develop sustainable businesses. These services can be accessed through the SEDFA website, allowing farmers to benefit from support without leaving their homes.

Ndleleni Jafta, a commonage farmer, expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting the value of the educational program and urging the district to continue hosting similar events. The Farmers Information Day demonstrated DARD’s commitment to empowering local farmers, promoting sustainable practices, and strengthening the agricultural community in the Free State.
