The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Council, recently conducted a five-day Small-scale Dairy workshop in the Chris Hani District Municipality. The event targeted emerging and small-scale dairy farmers, providing comprehensive training designed to improve dairy management, increase productivity, and promote sustainability. Participants gained practical skills in animal health management, proper milking techniques, feed formulation, pasture management, and hygiene practices, all aimed at enhancing milk quality and reducing production losses.

Experts from the Agricultural Research Council shared insights on modern dairy technologies, disease prevention, breeding programs, and efficient milking equipment. They also guided farmers on market access, showing them how to expand local and regional sales of their dairy products. The workshop included sessions on business management, record-keeping, financial planning, cooperative structures, and value addition, giving participants tools to run more profitable and efficient farms.

Interactive sessions encouraged farmers to share experiences, challenges, and solutions, creating a platform for peer learning and networking. Attendees left with practical strategies to improve their dairy operations and long-term plans for growth. The initiative demonstrates the department’s commitment to strengthening small-scale dairy farming, improving rural livelihoods, and supporting the resilience and development of the dairy sector in the Eastern Cape.
