ARC-VIMP took its innovative agricultural solutions directly to vegetable trial sites in Ficksburg, Free State, on Thursday, hosting the Bioslurry Living Lab Farmer Field Day. The event brought together farmers, researchers, and stakeholders for hands-on demonstrations and practical learning, allowing participants to see the benefits of biogas by-products applied in real farming conditions. Farmers had the opportunity to ask questions, discuss challenges, and explore ways to integrate bioslurry into their own operations to improve crop production and soil health.

The Bioslurry Living Lab is a farmer-focused research initiative that tests and showcases the use of bioslurry, a nutrient-rich by-product of biogas production, as an organic fertiliser. At the field day, researchers demonstrated how applying bioslurry to potato fields increased soil fertility, enhanced microbial activity, and boosted crop growth. Farmers were able to see measurable results, including healthier plants and stronger yields, showing how bioslurry can reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers while promoting sustainable farming practices.

Participants also learned practical techniques for using bioslurry, including correct application rates, timing, and methods to maximise nutrient absorption by crops. Researchers explained that regular use of bioslurry not only improves soil structure but also helps prevent nutrient runoff, supporting long-term soil health and environmental sustainability. Farmers attending the event reported interest in adopting these methods to increase productivity and lower input costs on their farms.

The field day encouraged collaboration and knowledge exchange between farmers and experts, fostering innovation in regenerative agriculture. Attendees discussed challenges such as integrating bioslurry into existing fertiliser routines and strategies for scaling up its use across larger fields. This interactive approach ensures that farmers leave the event with practical skills and actionable insights they can implement immediately.

By bringing bioslurry solutions directly to the trial sites, ARC-VIMP demonstrated how research-based innovations can translate into real benefits for farmers. The initiative highlights the importance of education, practical demonstrations, and collaboration in improving crop yields, maintaining soil health, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Farmers leave equipped not only with knowledge but with techniques that can strengthen productivity, enhance food security, and promote long-term success in the Free State and beyond.
