DARDLEA MEC Ms Khethiwe Moeketsi recently led a site visit to Mkhondo to assess damage caused by heavy rainfall, accompanied by the MMC for Finance and senior management. The team visited Mandlangampisi, Madabukela, and Ogenyaneni farms, all of which had previously received support from the Department through vegetable tunnels, Smart Agricultural Boxes, and seedlings. The visit aimed to evaluate the impact of the floods, engage with affected farmers, and coordinate government response.

During the visit, MEC Moeketsi handed over vegetable seedlings as short-term relief, allowing farmers to continue producing food despite the damage. She emphasized that all affected farmers would receive further assistance after a comprehensive assessment report is completed across all districts. “The site visit has started in Mkhondo and will continue to other districts,” MEC Moeketsi said.

For long-term relief, the Department will provide support once disaster fund allocations become available. The visit also aimed to understand the extent of the damage and identify specific areas where government intervention is needed. Farmers were advised to closely monitor water levels and remain prepared for potential storms, as weather conditions remain unpredictable.

This proactive approach by DARDLEA highlights the commitment to ensuring farmers receive timely support, protect their crops, and maintain food production in the face of climate challenges.
