Free State Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs MEC Elzabe Mmabatho Rockman and Head of Department Mr Tshepo Mabilo met with farmers from Harrismith-Intabazwe on 21 January 2026. The gathering took place at the Intabazwe Multipurpose Hall and formed part of an ongoing programme of farmer engagements across the province.
The meeting opened with a technical session focused on Foot and Mouth Disease. Veterinary specialists Dr Mojapelo and Dr Barnard briefed farmers on current disease risks and practical prevention strategies. They advised producers to purchase livestock only from verified and compliant suppliers. They highlighted that unregulated animal movement remains one of the main causes of disease spread. Farmers were encouraged to apply strict biosecurity measures, keep accurate livestock records and report suspected cases without delay.
After the presentations, farmers took part in an open discussion with MEC Rockman and HOD Mabilo. Producers shared concerns linked to animal health services, production costs, infrastructure and access to markets. The leadership team responded directly and outlined how the department plans to improve extension support and farmer assistance. The session allowed farmers to raise issues openly and receive immediate feedback.
This engagement forms part of MEC Rockman’s ongoing outreach programme with farmers across the Free State. Since June 2024, she has prioritised regular visits and direct interaction with agricultural communities. The approach aims to identify challenges early and develop practical solutions in partnership with farmers.
The Harrismith-Intabazwe meeting supports the rural development objectives of the 7th administration. These objectives focus on responsive government, improved service delivery and sustainable livelihoods for farmers and farm workers. By combining technical guidance with direct engagement, the department continues to strengthen disease control efforts and support productive farming systems in the province.
