On 22 January 2026, DARD MEC Elzabe “Mmabatho” Rockman and HOD Mr. Tshepo Mabilo met with Traditional Leaders in Qwaqwa to strengthen livestock management and support rural farmers. The meeting, led by Morena Neo Mopeli, Chairperson of the Provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, focused on signing the Livestock Transfer Payment Agreement. This agreement provides farmers with access to government support for livestock acquisition and management, ensuring sustainable growth of herds in rural communities.

The session included a detailed presentation on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) by local Departmental Veterinarians. Dr. Fourie explained how to identify FMD in cattle, including key signs such as fever, blisters in the mouth or hooves, excessive salivation, and lameness. He outlined practical prevention and control measures: maintaining strict biosecurity on farms, isolating new or sick animals, disinfecting equipment, and reporting suspected cases immediately to veterinary authorities. Farmers and leaders were also briefed on proper vaccination schedules and herd management strategies to reduce the risk of outbreaks.

Farmers and Traditional Leaders were encouraged to actively participate in livestock programs and use the Livestock Transfer Payment Agreement to improve herd quality and productivity. The Department emphasized that collaboration with Traditional Leadership ensures that support reaches the right communities and that disease prevention measures are effectively implemented at the local level.

This initiative reflects the Department’s commitment to helping farmers increase productivity, protect livestock health, and sustain rural livelihoods. By combining government support with traditional leadership guidance, livestock farmers in Qwaqwa can strengthen herd management, reduce disease risk, and access resources for long-term growth.
