North West Agriculture MEC Supports Community Gardening Initiatives

On 28 November 2025, North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Virginia Tlhapi visited Tlhabane, Rustenburg, to hand over seedlings and gardening tools to local community organisations. She was joined by Bojanala District Director Patronella Chabedi in a programme designed to promote food security and self-sufficiency.

Tshupe Hospice was among the beneficiaries, receiving a range of seedlings and essential garden tools. The initiative aims to support the hospice in growing fresh produce for patients and staff, enhancing nutrition and reducing operational costs.

In addition, SOS Children’s Home and 14 destitute families received gardening supplies. The support empowers families to cultivate their own food, improve household nutrition and create opportunities for small-scale home gardening enterprises. Recipients were guided on basic planting techniques and sustainable garden management to ensure long-term success.

MEC Tlhapi highlighted the importance of community-driven agriculture. She emphasised that these interventions strengthen local food systems, promote healthy eating, and provide practical skills that benefit households and community institutions alike.

The handover forms part of the department’s ongoing effort to support vulnerable groups through targeted agricultural programmes. By providing seedlings, tools, and practical guidance, the department enables communities in Bojanala District to actively participate in food production and reduce dependence on external assistance.

This initiative reflects the department’s commitment to empowering communities with resources and knowledge to improve livelihoods. By fostering home and institutional gardening, the programme contributes to sustainable food security and strengthens community resilience across the North West Province.
