On 30 November 2025, Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Nakedi Kekana visited SL & Sons Poultry Farm in Mookgophong to assess progress following a recent vandalism incident. The project, which experienced delays due to criminal damage, has had its infrastructure fully repaired. The matter was reported to law enforcement, and a case of malicious damage to property is under investigation.
SL & Sons Poultry is a key project within the department’s high-impact agricultural investments. It forms part of the RAAVC programme, which prioritises initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on imports, boosting rural economic activity, and creating employment opportunities. The poultry project supports both direct and indirect job creation while enhancing local food production capacity.
The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture has monitored the project closely, recognising the significant public funds invested. MEC Kekana’s visit highlighted the department’s commitment to protecting and advancing critical agricultural projects despite challenges.

The project includes the construction of a 40 000-bird capacity chicken house, designed to strengthen the provincial poultry value chain. Once operational, it will ensure consistent supply to the Lebowakgomo Abattoir, a strategic facility for Limpopo’s meat processing sector.
SL & Sons Poultry, owned by Mr Percy Makola, already operates two similar-capacity houses. The expansion is expected to significantly increase production, serving walk-in customers and local vendors more effectively. The additional capacity will enhance market reach, support local supply chains, and contribute to sustainable growth in the province’s poultry sector.
The department’s intervention demonstrates its focus on protecting high-value agricultural investments and supporting enterprises that drive rural development. By combining infrastructure support, regulatory oversight, and strategic planning, LDARD aims to strengthen the poultry sector and secure long-term food security in Limpopo.
