The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD), in collaboration with the Limpopo Hemp and Cannabis Farmers Association (LHCFA), conducted a landmark hemp planting demonstration at JoAnne Herbs Farm, owned by Ms Badane, the Chairperson of LHCFA. This event marked the first planting of the ARC Can 01 hemp variety in the province.
The demonstration was led by Dr Mathobo Rudzani, the Cannabis Coordinator at LDARD, who provided hands-on guidance to participating farmers. The session covered proper planting techniques, spacing, soil preparation, and best practices for establishing a healthy hemp crop. Farmers were also briefed on the regulatory requirements for hemp cultivation and the potential economic benefits of entering the emerging hemp market.
The introduction of the ARC Can 01 variety is a significant step for the province’s agricultural sector. The variety is known for its adaptability, high biomass yield, and suitability for both fiber and seed production. Its successful cultivation can open new opportunities for local farmers in value-added hemp products, including textiles, oils, and wellness products.
LDARD’s collaboration with LHCFA demonstrates the department’s commitment to supporting emerging farmers and promoting alternative crops that contribute to rural economic growth. By providing technical support, demonstrations, and guidance, the department aims to equip farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the growing hemp industry.
The event also highlighted the potential for hemp to diversify farming systems, increase income streams, and strengthen food and agricultural security in the province. Participants left the demonstration with practical skills and a clear understanding of how to manage hemp from planting to harvest.
This first demonstration sets the foundation for future hemp initiatives in the province, reinforcing LDARD and LHCFA’s commitment to innovation, farmer empowerment, and sustainable agricultural development. The successful adoption of hemp cultivation is expected to create new economic opportunities and establish the province as a leader in the emerging cannabis and hemp sector.
