KwaZulu-Natal MEC Urges Farmers to Join Cooperatives for Better Market Access

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa, has called on farmers to actively participate in cooperatives to strengthen their bargaining power and secure better prices for their produce.

Addressing hundreds of cooperative members at Mntabuntengayo Sports Ground in uMbumbulu, MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa spoke at a programme organised by the KZN Ezolimo Movement. The participating cooperatives are working to establish a Chamber of Cooperatives in Agriculture, which will unite primary and secondary agricultural cooperatives across the province.

The Chamber aims to provide farmers with access to funding opportunities, market linkages, training, and other developmental support. Key objectives include creating sustainable access to markets through initiatives like RASET and Agrihubs, bulk purchasing of essential farming inputs, and promoting collective farming with a focus on high-demand commodities.

MEC kaMadlopha-Mthethwa emphasised the value of cooperatives in enhancing market competitiveness. “I would like to encourage farmers to participate in cooperatives, as these entities possess significant bargaining power when negotiating favourable prices with suppliers. Consider yourselves as operating a serious business and note that government assistance is often more favourable for entities that have a capacity to create employment opportunities for the people,” she said.

By joining cooperatives, farmers can leverage shared resources, access technical and financial support, and improve profitability. The formation of the Chamber of Cooperatives in Agriculture is expected to strengthen collaboration, reduce production costs, and expand market opportunities for farmers throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to empowering farmers, promoting sustainable agriculture, and supporting inclusive economic growth in the province.
