The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Meals on Wheels Community Services South Africa (MOWCS) to strengthen local vegetable production and support community-based food security initiatives. The partnership focuses on improving farming infrastructure, increasing fresh produce supply, and providing training for small-scale and emerging farmers.
Under the MoU, DARD will provide financial support to expand vegetable production facilities, including irrigation, seed supply, and storage systems. This investment ensures a consistent supply of fresh vegetables to MOWCS soup kitchens while creating opportunities for local farmers to participate in production and distribution.
The partnership also prioritises skills development and capacity building. Farmers will receive guidance on modern cultivation techniques, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling to improve yields and reduce losses. This approach strengthens local value chains and equips farmers with practical tools to increase productivity and income.
By linking government support with community needs, the initiative provides a sustainable model for smallholder farmers. The collaboration encourages efficient use of resources, joint planning, and sharing of agricultural expertise, helping farmers meet market demands while contributing to nutrition and food security.
DARD’s engagement with MOWCS reflects a commitment to inclusive growth in the agricultural sector. Farmers participating in the programme can benefit from technical support, access to inputs, and a guaranteed market for their produce, fostering resilience and long-term development.
This initiative demonstrates how partnerships between government and community organisations can drive practical improvements in local agriculture, ensuring fresh food reaches those in need while empowering farmers to expand production and strengthen rural economies.
