The Agricultural Research Council–Plant Health and Protection (ARC-PHP), through its Insect Ecology Division, recently implemented a capacity-building programme to strengthen knowledge exchange among farmers, extension personnel, and researchers. Funded by the Department of Agriculture, the initiative targets small-scale tomato growers and aims to improve production through practical, technical training.

The programme offered comprehensive modules covering key aspects of tomato farming. Participants received instruction on good agricultural practices, diagnostic skills for identifying major insect pests and their natural enemies, and management strategies for leaf miners and whiteflies. The training also included integrated pest management approaches for Tuta absoluta, safe pesticide handling and application techniques, and strategies to manage major bacterial pathogens affecting tomato crops.

The initiative was delivered in partnership with Youth in Agriculture and Rural Development (YARD-Sekhukhune) and the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Three training sessions were conducted in Mphanama, Schoonoord, and Vleischboom, reaching a total of 451 farmers. Notably, 52% of participants were youth, reflecting a strong focus on empowering the next generation of farmers.

Through these capacity-building sessions, farmers gained hands-on knowledge to improve crop health, enhance yields, and reduce losses caused by pests and diseases. Emphasis on integrated pest management and safe pesticide use equips growers with sustainable methods to maintain productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

The programme is set to expand across Limpopo and Mpumalanga, targeting additional small-scale farmers. By enhancing technical expertise and promoting best practices, the initiative aims to strengthen local tomato production, support food security, and create sustainable livelihoods in rural communities.
