Northern Cape Champions Coastal Governance and Environmental Awareness During Marine Week

Under the leadership of MEC Mase Manopole, the Northern Cape Department has strengthened its commitment to coastal governance, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. These efforts were highlighted during the Marine Week celebrations in Port Nolloth, where officials actively involved learners, educators, and residents in marine conservation initiatives.

The event, held at Fr. Butler Hall, placed Port Nolloth High School learners at the forefront. Students delivered poetry and presentations emphasizing the ocean’s critical role as a source of oxygen, food, medicine, jobs, and recreational opportunities. Their performances underscored the importance of protecting marine ecosystems for current and future generations.

Departmental officials supported these initiatives with interactive educational activities. A puppet show captured attention while illustrating the dangers of pollution, and informative talks addressed pressing issues such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Rabies. These sessions provided practical knowledge on environmental risks and public health, fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility among attendees.

Despite cold and windy conditions, the celebration concluded with a coastal clean-up. Learners and community members participated enthusiastically, collecting litter along the shoreline and demonstrating a collective commitment to preserving the marine environment.
