Yesterday, the Department of Agriculture (DoA) marked a milestone as MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe, joined by Senqu Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Velile Stokhwe and other officials, officially handed over a tractor and agricultural implements to 85-year-old Sipho Ndabana. Ndabana, a former liberation struggle fighter and respected community elder, continues to empower local youth through agricultural initiatives.
The handover is part of the department’s broader strategy to strengthen agricultural productivity and skills development among emerging farmers. The tractor, equipped with essential implements, will allow Ndabana to expand his agricultural programs and mentor young people in practical farming techniques.
Speaking at the event, MEC Kontsiwe highlighted the importance of supporting veteran farmers who play a crucial role in community development. She noted that enabling access to modern farming tools helps preserve agricultural knowledge while promoting food security and youth employment.
Ndabana has dedicated decades to farming and community service. He has used his experience to train young people in crop production, livestock management, and sustainable farming practices. The new tractor will enhance his capacity to implement these programs efficiently, reducing manual labor and increasing productivity.
Mayor Stokhwe commended the collaboration between the DoA and local municipalities, noting that such initiatives create opportunities for youth to acquire skills that improve their livelihoods. She emphasized that honoring former liberation fighters while investing in youth development strengthens both heritage and economic growth.
The tractor handover demonstrates the government’s commitment to combining historical recognition with practical support for agricultural development. Ndabana’s continued mentorship provides young farmers with guidance, technical knowledge, and inspiration to pursue agriculture as a viable career.
Through initiatives like this, the Department of Agriculture aims to create sustainable farming communities, increase youth participation in agriculture, and ensure that knowledge from experienced farmers is preserved for future generations.
