The Free State MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, together with the Head of Department, recently met with the Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa (Land Bank) to strengthen support for local farmers. The meeting focused on creating a partnership that will help emerging and commercialising producers grow their operations.

A major point of discussion was access to funding. The MEC highlighted programmes like the Blended Finance Programme, which provide flexible financial solutions tailored to farmers’ needs. Both the department and the Land Bank agreed that easier access to funding is key to boosting productivity and expanding farm businesses.

The meeting also addressed agricultural insurance challenges. Farmers often face risks from extreme weather and crop failure. The partnership aims to develop practical solutions that protect farmers and give them confidence to invest in their farms.

Market access was another key topic. The officials stressed the importance of connecting producers to formal markets and supply chains, ensuring that crops and livestock reach buyers efficiently. Training in financial literacy and farm management was also emphasized to help farmers run profitable and sustainable operations.

Both the Agriculture Department and Land Bank committed to structured programmes that support inclusive growth in the Free State. Farmers can expect better access to finance, improved risk protection, and training to strengthen their businesses.

This partnership signals a strong focus on practical support for farmers, helping them grow their operations, secure income, and contribute to the province’s agricultural economy.
