North West Department of Agriculture Boosts Food Security with Boer Goat Support

In celebration of Food Security Month and ahead of this year’s Provincial Commemoration of World Food Day on 23 October 2025 at Kgakala Township in Leeudoringstad, the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development continues to support local farmers through targeted livestock initiatives.

This week, five farmers from Boskuil, Tigane, Khuma, and Ikageng received Boer goat breeding stock from the Department. Each beneficiary was provided with ten does and one buck, totaling fifty-five goats distributed. This initiative aims to strengthen livestock production, improve food security, and promote sustainable farming practices within rural communities.

The beneficiaries included one male youth, two adult males, and two females, highlighting the Department’s commitment to inclusivity and empowering diverse segments of society. By supporting both young and established farmers, the programme fosters long-term agricultural development and resilience.

These livestock interventions form part of broader efforts by the Department to enhance local food production and create sustainable livelihoods. Boer goats are valued for their adaptability and high-quality meat, offering farmers reliable income opportunities while contributing to household nutrition.

MEC Madoda Sambatha will lead the Provincial Commemoration of World Food Day, where the Department will highlight its ongoing programmes designed to empower farmers and strengthen the province’s agricultural sector. Through initiatives like the Boer goat distribution, the North West Department of Agriculture demonstrates its commitment to building food-secure communities and improving rural livelihoods.
