Joy and celebration filled Embokodo International Church in Boschfontein, Nkomazi Municipality, as 55 local farmers graduated from the 12-month Farmer Field School (FFS) Programme. The event marked the successful completion of an intensive year of practical training designed to improve crop production and farming skills.

The Farmer Field School programme is a hands-on, participatory approach aimed at smallholder and subsistence farmers. Participants meet regularly to learn by doing, observe agro-ecosystems, and develop critical thinking skills necessary for sustainable farming. Farmers are encouraged to experiment with techniques, monitor results, and share experiences, creating a collaborative learning environment.

Unlike traditional top-down extension methods, FFS is a “school without walls.” It allows farmers to take the lead in solving production challenges, fostering innovation and problem-solving. The programme was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to support small-scale farmers in adopting effective and sustainable agricultural practices.

Throughout the 12 months, participants gained practical knowledge in crop management, pest control, soil health, and water conservation. The programme also emphasized teamwork, observation, and analytical thinking, helping farmers to make informed decisions on their farms.

Graduates expressed pride in their achievements and confidence in applying the skills learned to increase productivity and improve household food security. Local leaders and programme coordinators highlighted the importance of FFS in transforming rural farming communities and promoting sustainable agriculture in Nkomazi.

The success of this cohort demonstrates the impact of participatory agricultural training and reinforces the value of empowering small-scale farmers to lead in their own development.
