Minister John Steenhuisen and Dr Emmanuelle Soubeyran, Director-General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), are attending the Global Conference on Biological Threat Reduction in Geneva. The conference brings together experts from around the world to strengthen the One Health approach, which links animal, human, and environmental health.

Discussions focus on reducing biological threats and combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), a growing challenge that affects public health, agriculture, and food security. The conference emphasizes the need for coordinated strategies across sectors to detect, prevent, and respond to biological risks.

Minister Steenhuisen highlighted that global collaboration is key to building resilient food systems capable of withstanding emerging threats. Dr Soubeyran underscored the role of scientific partnerships and shared data in improving disease surveillance, biosecurity, and responsible antimicrobial use.

The event also explores practical measures for integrating animal and human health policies, enhancing laboratory capacity, and promoting sustainable practices that safeguard ecosystems. By fostering dialogue between governments, scientists, and industry, the conference aims to develop actionable strategies for long-term biological risk reduction.

Participants agreed that regional and international cooperation is essential to addressing complex challenges such as AMR and zoonotic diseases. The Geneva discussions reinforce the commitment to proactive, science-driven solutions that protect human health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability.

The Global Conference on Biological Threat Reduction sets the stage for strengthened partnerships and policy alignment, supporting a safer, more resilient global food and health system.
