MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, alongside colleagues from the Departments of e-Government, Health, and Sports, Arts and Culture, updated stakeholders at the Gauteng Legislature on the province’s agricultural and rural development achievements. The briefing highlighted key successes in supporting farmers, boosting food security, and strengthening veterinary services.

The department reported 643 smallholder farmers supported, exceeding the annual target of 500. In addition, 174,969 Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines were administered, ensuring healthier livestock across the province. These milestones were achieved without additional funding, reflecting efficient resource management and prioritization of agricultural initiatives.

MEC Ramokgopa emphasized fiscal responsibility, noting 100% regular expenditure and an unqualified audit for the 2024/25 financial year. “Every rand must work for the people of Gauteng,” she stated, linking sound financial management to tangible outcomes for farmers and rural communities.

The province’s focus extends beyond livestock health. Gauteng is investing in agro-processing, rural development, and veterinary services to create sustainable farming systems. Smallholder farmers gain access to resources, training, and veterinary support, enabling them to increase productivity, improve food security, and expand market opportunities.

These results demonstrate Gauteng’s commitment to building resilient agricultural communities. By combining strategic planning, practical interventions, and efficient use of resources, the province is driving measurable growth in the agricultural sector and supporting the livelihoods of farmers across rural areas.

Gauteng’s achievements serve as a model for agricultural development, showing how integrated support, strong governance, and targeted programs can transform smallholder farming into a foundation for economic growth and food security.
