Free State MEC Elzabe Rockman Leads World Food Day Commemoration in Xhariep District

The Free State MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs, Ms. Elzabe Rockman, together with the Head of Department, Mr. Tshepo Mabilo, is leading the Provincial World Food Day Commemoration at Phillipolis Township Community Hall in Xhariep District today.

The annual event highlights the critical role of the agricultural sector in ensuring food security, improving livelihoods, and promoting sustainable farming practices across communities in the province. It serves as a platform to raise awareness on the importance of agriculture in building resilient food systems.

This year, the commemoration carries the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” reflecting a collective commitment to advancing food security and strengthening sustainable agricultural practices.

Activities began at Bergmanshoogte Intermediate School, where officials planted trees and handed over garden tools and seeds to local schools and community members. These initiatives aim to promote school gardens, encourage youth involvement in agriculture, and provide practical support to small-scale growers.

MEC Rockman emphasized the need for collaboration between government, communities, and farmers to ensure a sustainable food supply. She highlighted that programs like these not only enhance nutrition but also create opportunities for local economic growth and skill development.

Through these celebrations, the Free State continues to showcase the value of agriculture as a driver for food security, community development, and environmental sustainability.
