The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality marked World Food Day at Utlwanang Community Hall in Christiana with a focus on action-oriented interventions to boost household food security and promote sustainable livelihoods. The event highlighted practical support for local communities, moving beyond awareness to tangible solutions.
Fifteen local beneficiaries received ten goats and a breeding buck each to develop small-scale livestock enterprises. The livestock support enables households to produce milk and meat while generating income, creating a foundation for sustainable agricultural activity.
Emerging beekeepers were also supported. Five recipients received full starter kits to begin honey production, offer pollination services, and enter the agri-business sector. The initiative aims to expand small-scale agricultural enterprises and diversify income streams for rural households.
Several households received fruit trees, vegetable seeds, and gardening tools to establish or expand home food gardens. These gardens increase access to fresh produce, reduce household food costs, and contribute to nutritional security.
Addressing the attendees, District Director Tubatse Motsoeneng emphasized the practical focus of the day. “We are encouraging our communities to actively participate in food production. Food security is everyone’s responsibility, and as a district we must ensure that households are not left vulnerable,” he said.
Community members welcomed the interventions, noting that the support strengthens resilience against hunger and creates opportunities for small-scale agri-enterprises.
The district’s World Food Day activities demonstrate a commitment to sustainable agriculture and food security. By supporting livestock farming, beekeeping, and home gardening, the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District is empowering households, building local capacity, and promoting long-term resilience in rural communities.
