The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development in Limpopo, Nakedi Kekana, met yesterday with the outgoing Colleges Advisory Board at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane. The meeting marked the handover of the Board’s final report after completing its three-year extended term, providing a moment to reflect on its impact on the Province’s Colleges of Agriculture.
MEC Kekana praised the Board for its dedication since October 2022. While established as an alternative to fully autonomous councils under the Higher Education Act, the Board played a vital role in academic governance, policy guidance, and operational oversight. Its hands-on involvement included graduations, curriculum alignment, and guiding institutional policies.
The MEC highlighted the Board’s contribution to keeping the colleges aligned with departmental priorities, national frameworks, and the changing needs of South Africa’s agricultural sector. Its advice influenced decisions on financial accountability, staffing, infrastructure, and student support. Kekana noted that the Board ensured colleges served as hubs for future farmers, researchers, and agripreneurs, not just training centres.
Reflecting on the handover report, MEC Kekana described it as evidence of the Board’s thoughtful leadership. She acknowledged the challenge of serving both the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Higher Education and Training, and praised the Board for providing clarity, fairness, and strategic direction.
Looking ahead, MEC Kekana expressed confidence that the incoming Advisory Board will build on this strong foundation. She thanked outgoing members for their integrity and service, noting their work has strengthened the colleges and positioned them for transformation into Agricultural Training Institutes of excellence.
This meeting underscored the importance of strong governance in agricultural education and the role Advisory Boards play in preparing the next generation of farmers and agribusiness leaders in Limpopo.
