Potchefstroom The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, through the Potchefstroom College of Agriculture, in partnership with the North West Farmers’ Association of South Africa (NWAFASA), AgriSETA, and BLC Academy, hosted a historic certification ceremony on 03 September 2025 at the Potchefstroom College of Agriculture.
A total of 197 emerging farmers received certification after completing intensive training programmes in Cattle, Goats, Grain, Poultry, and Horticulture. The initiative aims to equip farmers with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to build sustainable and productive agricultural enterprises.
The programme addresses multiple challenges in the sector. The department worked with public and private industries, farmer organisations, and representatives to expose learners to further opportunities, including Comprehensive Agricultural Support Program (CASP) funding models.
Speaking at the ceremony, Head of Department Thupi Mokhatla highlighted the importance of partnerships. He said the programme shows a commitment to building a stronger, resilient agricultural sector that supports food security and drives rural economic growth.
NWAFASA chairperson Andrew Aphane thanked AgriSETA for sponsorship, BLC Academy for training, and the Department for supporting emerging farmers. He said the partnership has been essential in providing the knowledge and skills needed to grow sustainable agricultural businesses.
The department congratulated all 197 learners for their dedication and passion. Their achievement marks a milestone in strengthening North West’s agricultural landscape. Agriculture in the province is entering a bold new chapter.
