The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), with support from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) through the SSAS Incentive Scheme, recently facilitated a successful trade mission that connected ten Eastern Cape companies in the agriculture, agri-processing and agri-technology sectors to international markets at the International Food Show Africa in Tunis, Tunisia.
The mission formed part of ongoing efforts to expand export opportunities for Eastern Cape businesses and position the province as a competitive player in global agricultural value chains.
The programme began with a Market Intelligence Session hosted in collaboration with the South African Embassy in Tunisia and led by South Africa’s Ambassador to Tunisia, Her Excellency Ambassador Lindiwe Hendricks. The session equipped participating companies with valuable insights into the Tunisian market, consumer trends, regulatory requirements and potential trade opportunities across North Africa.
Armed with this knowledge, the Eastern Cape delegation participated in a three-day exhibition where businesses showcased a diverse range of products, services and innovative solutions to international buyers, distributors, investors and industry stakeholders. The exhibition provided a platform for companies to demonstrate the quality and competitiveness of Eastern Cape agricultural products while exploring new business partnerships.
Beyond the exhibition floor, the delegation engaged in numerous business-to-business meetings, networking sessions and market exploration activities aimed at establishing commercial relationships and identifying export opportunities. These engagements created pathways for local companies to expand their reach into North African markets and strengthen cross-border trade connections.
For Eastern Cape farmers and agro-processors, such initiatives are critical in opening access to new markets and increasing demand for locally produced goods. Export growth not only creates revenue opportunities for businesses but also supports job creation, value addition and rural economic development throughout the province.
The trade mission further highlighted the growing importance of agro-processing and agricultural innovation in driving economic growth. By connecting local enterprises with international markets, the ECDC is helping businesses move beyond primary production and capture greater value through processing, packaging and technology-driven solutions.
As global demand for quality agricultural products continues to increase, the Eastern Cape is steadily building a reputation as a source of innovation, quality and investment potential. Through initiatives such as the Tunisia trade mission, the ECDC continues to support local businesses in accessing global markets, growing exports and showcasing Eastern Cape excellence on the world stage.
“The future of agriculture lies not only in production, but in building connections that enable farmers, processors and innovators to compete globally. The ECDC’s latest trade mission demonstrates how strategic partnerships can unlock new opportunities for the Eastern Cape’s agricultural sector.”
