On 26 June 2026, the Cooperative Rural Development Agency (CRDA) continued its structured stakeholder engagement programme as it moves closer to fully restoring operations at the Mbizana RED Hub in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. The engagement formed part of a broader effort to revive key rural infrastructure that supports agricultural development and local economic participation. It brought together traditional leadership, elected officials and cooperative representatives to align expectations ahead of the facility’s reopening. The process focused on transparency, collaboration and long term sustainability of the hub. It also reflected the importance of coordinated planning before operations officially resume.
The meeting included traditional leadership from Dyifani Village, led by Headwoman Ah Zwelitsha Hlamandani, alongside Ward Councillor Mr Qalamba and members of the Sivuka Sonke Secondary Co-operative. Their participation ensured that community voices were directly involved in shaping the future of the Mbizana RED Hub. The presence of multiple stakeholders helped strengthen communication between government structures and local communities. It also created space for practical discussions about how the facility will operate once fully active. This inclusive approach aimed to prevent misunderstandings and build shared ownership of the project.
During the engagement, CRDA formally introduced Sila Milling South Africa (Pty) Ltd as the private operating partner responsible for supporting the hub’s operational phase. The introduction was an important step in clarifying roles and responsibilities ahead of the launch. Discussions focused on operational planning, including production processes, supply chain coordination and farmer participation. The involvement of a private partner is expected to strengthen efficiency and improve the commercial viability of the facility. Stakeholders were given the opportunity to raise questions and gain clarity on how the partnership will function in practice.
Operations at the Mbizana RED Hub are expected to officially commence in the coming months, following final preparations and alignment processes. The hub is designed to serve as a key agricultural processing and development centre that supports local farmers and cooperatives. Once operational, it is expected to improve access to markets and enhance value addition for agricultural produce in the region. The planning process has placed strong emphasis on ensuring that local farmers are integrated into the supply chain. This approach aims to ensure that the benefits of the facility are shared widely within the community.
ECRDA reiterated its commitment to working closely with all local stakeholders to ensure the successful revival and long term sustainability of the Mbizana RED Hub. The agency highlighted that ongoing collaboration with traditional leadership, councillors and cooperatives remains essential for operational success. The engagement also reinforced the importance of building trust between communities and implementing partners. By maintaining open communication, CRDA aims to reduce risks and improve coordination during the transition to full operations. This cooperative approach is central to ensuring that the facility delivers meaningful development outcomes.
The revival of the Mbizana RED Hub is expected to create new opportunities for farmers, cooperatives and the wider community in the area. Improved access to processing facilities will allow farmers to add value to their produce and increase income potential. The project also has the potential to stimulate local job creation and support small business development linked to agricultural production. Community stakeholders expressed interest in participating actively once operations begin, particularly in supply and production activities. This reflects growing optimism about the economic impact of the hub.
The engagement marked another important step in the broader effort to strengthen rural development infrastructure in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. It demonstrated the value of early and continuous consultation in ensuring that development projects are implemented smoothly. By involving all relevant stakeholders before operations begin, CRDA aims to build a strong foundation for long term success. The Mbizana RED Hub is positioned as a key driver of agricultural growth and rural economic transformation. Continued cooperation between government, private partners and local communities will be essential to achieving these goals.
