Bilateral discussions between the Agricultural Research Council and Italy’s Council for Agricultural Research and Economics marked an important step forward in strengthening international cooperation in agricultural science and innovation. The engagement took place during the South Africa–Italy Agriculture Business Forum and focused on expanding joint research efforts that can support food security, climate resilience and agricultural productivity. Agricultural Research Council played a central role in the talks alongside Italy’s leading research institution, Council for Agricultural Research and Economics. The discussions brought together senior scientific and leadership figures who explored ways to align research priorities and share technical expertise. The overall goal was to build stronger scientific bridges between the two countries through practical collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The engagement included key representatives from both institutions, reflecting a high level of commitment to long term cooperation. On the South African side, ARC President and CEO Litha Magingxa participated in the discussions alongside Dr Petronella Chaminuka and Dr Linda Mtwisha, both of whom have been actively involved in agricultural research and policy development. From the Italian side, Andrea Rocchi represented CREA and contributed to discussions on innovation systems and applied agricultural economics. The meeting created space for both institutions to reflect on shared challenges such as climate variability, resource efficiency and the need for sustainable farming systems. It also highlighted the importance of aligning scientific research with real world agricultural needs.

A key focus of the discussions was how agricultural science can be used more effectively to address global challenges that affect both developed and developing farming systems. Participants explored opportunities for joint research programmes that could improve soil health management, water use efficiency and crop productivity under changing climate conditions. The exchange also emphasized the importance of innovation in agricultural technologies, including data driven farming systems and improved research methodologies. By combining expertise from South Africa and Italy, the institutions aim to develop solutions that are adaptable across different agricultural environments. This approach reflects a growing recognition that agricultural challenges are increasingly global and require coordinated scientific responses.

The discussions also reinforced the importance of institutional partnerships in building long term research capacity. Both ARC and CREA expressed interest in strengthening scientist exchanges, collaborative projects and shared training initiatives. These efforts are expected to enhance skills development among researchers while also improving access to advanced research infrastructure and methodologies. The collaboration is seen as a way to accelerate innovation in agricultural systems by encouraging continuous knowledge sharing. It also supports the development of young researchers who can contribute to future scientific advancements in the sector.

The bilateral engagement concluded with a shared understanding that agricultural research collaboration is essential for building resilient and sustainable food systems. The participation of Agricultural Research Council and Council for Agricultural Research and Economics demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing scientific cooperation between South Africa and Italy. With leadership from figures such as Litha Magingxa, Petronella Chaminuka, Linda Mtwisha and Andrea Rocchi, the discussions set a clear foundation for future collaboration. The outcome points toward increased joint research efforts, stronger innovation systems and improved agricultural resilience. This partnership represents a strategic step toward building a more connected and scientifically advanced global agricultural research community.
