The National Council of Provinces delegation has reinforced its commitment to improving agricultural service delivery through a structured oversight visit under the Taking Parliament to the People programme. The visit focused on direct engagement with provincial leadership, agricultural institutions, and local economic sites in the North West. Led by the Chairperson of the Select Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Mineral Resources, the delegation aimed to assess progress, identify challenges, and strengthen coordination between government structures. The programme places emphasis on accountability and practical engagement with communities that depend on agriculture for livelihoods. It also ensures that parliamentary oversight remains connected to real conditions on the ground.
The delegation was led by Mpho Modise and included engagements with key provincial officials responsible for agriculture and rural development. They met with Madoda Sambatha as well as Head of Department Hans Kekana to discuss service delivery priorities and infrastructure performance. Discussions focused on strengthening coordination between national and provincial government structures to improve agricultural support systems. The delegation also engaged with management at Potchefstroom College of Agriculture to review training capacity and skills development programmes. These engagements highlighted the importance of aligning education, policy, and practical farming needs to support long term sector growth.
A key part of the oversight programme included a visit to agricultural infrastructure and market systems that support local producers. The delegation assessed ongoing initiatives aimed at improving efficiency in the agricultural value chain and expanding economic opportunities in rural communities. Attention was given to infrastructure challenges, market access barriers, and the effectiveness of existing government support programmes. The programme also prioritises direct interaction with stakeholders who operate within the agricultural economy on a daily basis. This approach helps ensure that oversight findings reflect real operational conditions rather than only administrative reports.
As part of the field engagement, the delegation visited the Matlosana Fresh Produce Market near Klerksdorp to assess its role in supporting local agricultural trade and distribution networks. The market serves as an important link between farmers and consumers by facilitating the movement of fresh produce into local and regional supply chains. Observations during the visit focused on infrastructure functionality, trading activity, and opportunities for expansion to support emerging farmers. The delegation also examined how the market contributes to local economic development and job creation within the surrounding communities. These assessments form part of broader efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains across the province.
The Taking Parliament to the People programme continues to play a central role in bringing governance closer to communities and ensuring that oversight translates into practical improvements. The visit demonstrated the importance of collaboration between national parliament, provincial departments, and local institutions in addressing agricultural challenges. It also reinforced the need for continuous investment in infrastructure, skills development, and market access to support sustainable growth in the sector. The engagement concluded with a focus on strengthening accountability mechanisms and improving service delivery outcomes for farmers and rural communities. Through such oversight initiatives, government aims to build a more efficient and inclusive agricultural economy that benefits all participants in the value chain.
