The fourth annual provincial Extension and Advisory Services Conference brought together agricultural professionals to strengthen knowledge sharing, improve service delivery and promote innovation in farming support systems. The event focused on the evolving role of extension practitioners in supporting producers across different agricultural sectors. The conference highlighted how modern agriculture requires continuous learning, collaboration and the integration of new technologies. Participants engaged in discussions aimed at improving the effectiveness of advisory services delivered to farmers and rural communities. In South Africa, such platforms are increasingly important in building a more responsive and skilled agricultural support system.

The first session of the day focused on key themes shaping the future of agricultural extension work. Presentations explored the role of learning networks in improving service delivery and strengthening collaboration among practitioners. Discussions also examined market driven agricultural production, where farmers are encouraged to align their activities with consumer demand and value chain opportunities. The use of social media by both smallholder producers and extension officers was highlighted as a practical tool for communication, marketing and knowledge exchange. Academic agricultural programmes were also reviewed to assess how well they prepare future professionals for real world farming challenges. Climate smart agricultural practices formed another key topic, reflecting the growing need to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

MEC Mothlaping’s opening address reinforced the critical role of extension practitioners as the first point of contact between farmers and the broader agricultural system. He emphasised that these professionals act as teachers, support structures and facilitators who help bridge the gap between policy and practice. According to his remarks, extension officers must be equipped with up to date knowledge and practical tools to effectively support agricultural producers. This includes helping farmers improve productivity, adopt sustainable practices and strengthen their long term livelihoods. His message highlighted the importance of continuous professional development to ensure that extension services remain relevant and effective.

The conference created an interactive environment where practitioners could learn from each other as well as from guest presenters representing various institutions across the country. These exchanges allowed participants to share practical experiences from the field and discuss solutions to common challenges faced in agricultural communities. The learning networks approach was particularly valued because it encourages peer to peer knowledge transfer and reduces isolation among extension officers working in different regions. Participants also discussed how improved coordination between institutions can enhance service delivery outcomes. This collaborative model is seen as essential for building a stronger and more connected agricultural support system.

The emphasis on innovation and communication tools reflected the changing nature of agricultural advisory services in modern farming environments. Social media platforms were identified as useful channels for sharing information quickly and engaging directly with farmers. Market oriented production discussions encouraged practitioners to guide farmers in understanding demand trends and improving their competitiveness. Climate smart agriculture was also prioritised as a necessary response to environmental pressures affecting food production systems. In South Africa, these approaches are helping to transform extension services into more dynamic, responsive and knowledge driven systems that better support agricultural development and rural livelihoods.
