The South African fresh fruit industry is showing promising signs of transformation, with black growers reporting a notable uptick in export volumes. According to Fhumulani Ratshitanga, CEO of Fruit South Africa, the year-on-year performance for black growers in 2024 revealed a standout export-volume increase of 21.95%, highlighting the growing impact of targeted support and collaboration within the sector.

“This is super-encouraging,” Ratshitanga said, “but while these gains are significant, much still needs to be done to ensure black growers’ businesses are sustainable and profitable.”

Central to this progress is the continued investment in public-private partnerships, which are seen as essential to overcoming longstanding structural challenges. The government’s Blended Finance Scheme, which received a R7.8 billion injection during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, has been a critical tool for providing innovative funding solutions to black growers. These efforts aim to address persistent obstacles such as access to finance, infrastructure inefficiencies, and market entry barriers.

Industry surveys, including the recent Transformation Showcase in Limpopo, have confirmed that partnerships, collaboration, and access to finance are the top priorities for black growers. By focusing on these areas, the industry hopes to drive sustainable economic growth and broaden participation across all levels.

Ratshitanga emphasized that while the export-volume increase is an important milestone, achieving long-term transformation requires a continued focus on strategic support, mentorship, and streamlined funding mechanisms. Initiatives that strengthen infrastructure, logistics, and market access remain vital for black growers to compete effectively on both local and international stages.

“The progress we’ve seen demonstrates what is possible when stakeholders come together,” Ratshitanga noted. “We are committed to maintaining this momentum and ensuring that all industry players, particularly black growers, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s fresh fruit sector.”

With the South African fresh fruit industry increasingly recognized on the global stage, the combination of government support, public-private collaboration, and industry-driven initiatives positions black growers to capitalize on both existing and emerging export opportunities. As the sector continues to navigate challenges with agility and consistency, the 21.95% export-volume increase stands as a clear signal that transformation is not just a goal—it is becoming a reality.
