A new generation of agricultural professionals has entered the industry following the graduation of 68 students from Potchefstroom College of Agriculture, marking an important milestone for skills development and food security in North West Province.
The graduation ceremony, held on Friday, 27 February 2026 in Potchefstroom, celebrated years of academic dedication, practical training, and personal growth. The graduates are now equipped with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience needed to address modern agricultural challenges, from climate pressures to productivity demands across the sector.
College management praised the Class of 2025 for their resilience and commitment, noting that their achievements represent not only individual success but also progress for farming communities across South Africa.
Among the graduates, Loatile Lefa Makhetha stood out as the overall top performer. Reflecting on his academic journey, Makhetha credited disciplined study habits, active participation in lectures, and collaborative learning with fellow students as key factors behind his success.
He also highlighted the role played by lecturers in preparing students for the realities of the agricultural industry.
“I want to thank the academic staff of the Potchefstroom College of Agriculture. They have done their best to prepare us for the world out there,” Makhetha said.
According to Makhetha, the institution’s approach goes beyond theory by instilling professional values such as perseverance, integrity, and innovation—qualities increasingly required in a rapidly evolving agricultural environment.
Delivering the keynote address, Madoda Sambatha, MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, congratulated the graduates and emphasized the importance of practical exposure in agricultural education.
Sambatha acknowledged the contribution of farmers who opened their farms to students for experiential training.
“Practical exposure is the backbone of agricultural education. When theory meets practice, we produce competent, confident, and industry-ready graduates,” he said.
He further stressed that government partnerships with farmers, unions, and industry stakeholders are essential to building a stronger and more sustainable agricultural sector.
Addressing the graduates directly, Sambatha encouraged them to take advantage of opportunities within the industry:
“The future of agriculture is now in your hands. Go out there and immerse yourselves in the industry.”
Both the Potchefstroom institution and Taung College of Agriculture continue to play a critical role in developing skilled agricultural professionals. Their programs combine classroom learning with practical field experience, ensuring graduates are prepared to contribute meaningfully to farming operations, agribusiness, and rural development.
Applications for the 2027 academic intake at both colleges will open on 1 April 2026 and close at the end of October, offering prospective students an opportunity to pursue careers in one of the country’s most vital sectors.
With the latest group of graduates stepping into the industry, the outlook for agricultural innovation and productivity in the province continues to grow stronger
