Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Mzwanele Nyhontso, addressed farmers at the Harry Gwala Agricultural Land Symposium held at Sani Pass in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on practical ways to unlock agricultural potential and support emerging farmers. The symposium provided a platform for farmers to engage directly with government representatives, discuss challenges, and gain clarity on land reform processes. Minister Nyhontso emphasised that post-settlement support and guidance for leased farms are critical to turning land into productive agricultural ventures. He encouraged farmers to actively use available support programs, including mentorship, training, and access to agricultural infrastructure. By combining land access with practical assistance, the department aims to help farmers build profitable and sustainable operations that contribute to rural development.

One of the main concerns raised by farmers was clarity over title deeds and legal ownership. Minister Nyhontso assured attendees that the department is addressing these issues and working to ensure that beneficiaries comply with the necessary requirements to secure their land. He advised farmers to engage with local land offices to complete compliance steps, as clear ownership allows them to access financing, invest in equipment, and confidently plan their farming operations. The Minister explained that resolving title deed matters is not only a legal necessity but also a practical step toward long-term farm success. Farmers were encouraged to keep records and maintain communication with the department to expedite the process.

Minister Nyhontso also highlighted the need for a review of the Land Allocation policy to make it more responsive to the realities of emerging farmers. This policy review aims to ensure that land is allocated efficiently, fairly, and accompanied by the resources needed to succeed, including access to water, mechanisation, and market linkages. He emphasised that these changes are designed to empower farmers to make full use of their land, improve productivity, and generate income. Emerging farmers were advised to familiarise themselves with the updated allocation procedures and take advantage of programs that provide technical guidance, workshops, and financial support. Practical engagement with these initiatives allows farmers to transform allocated or leased land into productive farms.

The symposium also focused on broader strategies to enhance rural prosperity. Minister Nyhontso encouraged collaboration between farmers, government departments, and industry partners to improve market access and support sustainable practices. Training in modern farming techniques, crop and livestock management, and business planning were highlighted as key tools for success. Farmers were reminded that combining policy support with practical application on the farm is essential to achieving long-term growth. The Minister also stressed that local mentorship programs and agricultural development offices are available to guide emerging farmers through challenges in production, marketing, and operations.

The Harry Gwala Agricultural Land Symposium provided emerging farmers with both clarity and practical guidance on land reform and agricultural development. Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso’s address highlighted the importance of securing title deeds, engaging with post-settlement support programs, and using the updated Land Allocation policy to improve productivity. By taking advantage of government resources, training, and mentorship, emerging farmers can turn allocated or leased land into sustainable and profitable ventures. The event reinforced the message that land reform is not only about access but also about practical tools, guidance, and collaboration to help farmers succeed. With clear policies and support structures in place, KwaZulu-Natal’s emerging farmers are better positioned to grow their operations and contribute to rural economic development.
