The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in North West has expanded its efforts to promote food security and youth participation in agriculture through targeted school and community programmes. The initiative focused on practical learning, household support and skills development aimed at improving long-term food production capacity. Activities were carried out in Masutlhe with a strong emphasis on encouraging young people to see agriculture as a viable future pathway. The programme also targeted vulnerable households to improve access to basic food production resources. These interventions form part of broader efforts to build sustainable food systems in South Africa.

A key part of the programme was an information sharing session and planting demonstration held at Maano Secondary School. The session focused on teaching learners practical agricultural skills such as soil preparation, planting techniques and crop maintenance. Officials demonstrated how small-scale farming can be used to improve household food security and reduce dependency on external food sources. Learners were encouraged to take an active role in food production both at school and at home. The initiative also aimed to inspire interest in agriculture as a career path among young people in rural communities.

Support was also extended to Mailakgang Primary School as part of efforts to strengthen early agricultural education and practical learning. The department distributed seedlings, watering cans and shade net rolls to help establish and maintain productive school and household gardens. These resources are intended to improve crop survival rates and support year-round food production in varying weather conditions. In addition to schools, 10 household backyard gardens also received direct support to help families grow their own vegetables. The programme encourages self-reliance by enabling households to produce fresh food close to home.

Further support included the distribution of eggs to 100 households as part of an ongoing food security initiative aimed at improving nutrition at community level. This intervention helps address immediate dietary needs while complementing longer-term food production projects. Eggs provide an accessible source of protein, especially for children and elderly members of vulnerable households. The initiative also supports balanced nutrition in communities where access to diverse food groups is limited. By combining immediate relief with sustainable gardening support, the programme creates a more comprehensive approach to food security.

The overall impact of these initiatives is expected to strengthen local food systems and build long-term resilience in rural communities. By investing in schools, households and practical agricultural training, the department is helping to create a generation that is more skilled and engaged in food production. The programme also reduces pressure on household food budgets while improving nutrition outcomes across participating communities. It supports national goals of reducing hunger and promoting self-sufficiency through agriculture-based solutions. These continued efforts reflect a commitment to building stronger, more food-secure communities across North West Province and beyond.
