Stakeholders in the Gert Sibande District have committed to working together to support local smallholder farmers and strengthen community development. At a pre-Taking Legislature To The People engagement held at Ekulindeni Community Hall in Kroomdraai, representatives from Grain SA, CALM, Santam Insurance, the Deciduous Fruit Development Chamber, AFASA, and local Traditional Authorities met to align on common objectives. The meeting emphasized collaboration, shared resources, and targeted interventions that can improve production, access to markets, and risk management for smallholder operations. Participants highlighted that collective action is essential for creating sustainable agricultural growth and ensuring that local communities benefit from farming initiatives. This engagement serves as a platform to coordinate strategies that address both immediate challenges and long-term opportunities in the district.

During the meeting, stakeholders discussed practical ways to enhance support for smallholder farmers, including training programs, access to quality inputs, and financial assistance through insurance and credit schemes. Grain SA and CALM outlined their plans to provide technical guidance and mentorship, helping farmers increase yields and adopt sustainable practices. Santam Insurance committed to offering tailored insurance solutions that mitigate risks such as crop failure and livestock disease, ensuring that farmers’ investments are protected. The Deciduous Fruit Development Chamber emphasized the importance of market access for high-value crops, while AFASA highlighted the need for advocacy and policy support for smallholder farmers at provincial and national levels. Traditional Authorities reinforced the importance of community engagement and ensuring that initiatives respect local knowledge and customs.

The collaboration also set the stage for the upcoming week-long Taking Legislature To The People program at CALM next month. This program will provide an opportunity for farmers and community members to interact directly with legislators, industry experts, and service providers. Key topics will include modern farming techniques, financial literacy, cooperative development, and climate resilience strategies. Stakeholders agreed that the program will serve as a catalyst for knowledge sharing and networking, equipping farmers with the tools and information needed to grow their operations effectively. By connecting policymakers, industry bodies, and local farmers, the initiative aims to strengthen both agricultural productivity and community well-being in the district.

Through this coordinated effort, the Gert Sibande District is taking significant steps toward sustainable agricultural development and inclusive growth. By pooling expertise, resources, and support systems, stakeholders are ensuring that smallholder farmers can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the local economy. Programs like TLP not only provide practical guidance but also build trust and long-term partnerships between government, industry, and communities. The collective commitment of these key role-players promises to enhance food security, create employment opportunities, and empower farmers to achieve greater economic independence. This initiative represents a model for how collaboration can drive meaningful change in rural agricultural communities.
